5 things you didn’t know about Melinda Gates, philanthropist (born Aug. 15, 1964)

She was born in Dallas, the daughter of an aerospace engineer and a stay-at-home mom.

She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at Duke University, where she earned a double bachelor’s degree in computer science and economics as well as an MBA.

While at Microsoft in the 1990s, she worked as a marketing manager on the ill-fated Microsoft Bob project, which transformed the desktop into a house filled with animated characters.

She initially hesitated to go on a date with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates when he asked her out two weeks in advance because of his busy schedule.

She became interested in funding family planning efforts in the developing world after impoverished African women told her of walking for hours to reach medical clinics in a fruitless effort to obtain contraceptives.
